Swimming
Can you swim at Black Sand Beach Maui?
Although you may see people in the ocean when you visit Maui’s black sand beach, conditions are generally not conducive for casual swimmers to swim here.
Since there is no protective reef at Pailoa Black Sand Beach, the shorebreak is often dangerous, and the water level drops abruptly to a deep depth close to shore.
Also, the black sand beach at Waianapanapa is known for strong currents and dangerous riptides, and there is no lifeguard. Unless the waters are completely calm, it is best to stay out.
Finally, the waters can sometimes be infested with Portuguese man o’ war, which can give you painful stings.
